Drug Uses
Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is used for treating Duodenal ulcer, Gastric ulcer, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Oesophagitis , Acid related dyspepsia , NSAID associated ulceration, Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during anesthesia. Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is also used in combination with antibiotics for eradicating H. pylori infection of the stomach.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which blocks the production of acid in the stomach and it is a prodrug. Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome which are all caused by acid in the stomach.After administration it diffuses in to the parietal cell of the stomach and accumulates in the secretory canaliculi. In the acidic medium Omeprazole is converted to sulfenamide. This sulfenamide covalently interacts with sulfhydryl (SH) group in the proton pump (H+ K+ATPase) and inhibits the exchange of extracellular K+ for intracellular H+ ion. Omeprazole irreversibly inhibits proton pumps activity and decreases gastric acid secretion.
Absorption: Omeprazole is well absorbed after oral administration. Distribution: Omeprazole is widely distributed in the body in protein bound form.Metabolism: Omeprazole is extensively metabolised in the liver.Excretion: Omeprazole is excreted mainly in the faeces and small amount in urine.
How Taken
- Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is to be taken orally. Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) capsules should be taken1 hour before meals. Do not be crushed, chewed or opened Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) capsules swallow the whole.
- In adult the dose is: 10 - 20 mg / day to be taken before meals.
- Duodenal ulcer: 20 mg / day to be taken 30 minutes before meals for 1-2 months.
- Gastric ulcer: 20 mg / day for 1-2 months. In severe cases dose can be increased to 40 mg / day. Maintenance dose: 10 - 20 mg / day.
- Zollinger- Ellison syndrome: 60 mg / day increase the dose maximum up to 360 mg/ day in 3 divided doses if needed.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease, Oesophagitis: 20 mg / day for 1-2 months.
- Acid related dyspepsia (indigestion or stomach upset): 10 - 20 mg / day for 1 month.
- NSAID associated ulceration: 20mg / day for 1 month.
- Prophylaxis of acid aspiration during anesthesia: 40 mg in the evening before the surgery and the same dose 2 - 6 hours before the procedure.
- Children: Safety and efficacy not established in children younger than 2 year of age hence Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is not recommended in children below 2 years of age.
Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.

Store at room temperature, 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). Keep away from moisture and Protect from light.
Warnings/Precautions
- Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant since there are no adequate and well-controlled studies on the use of Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) in pregnant women.
- If you are breast-feeding a baby first talk to your doctor it is observed that Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) concentrations have been measured in breast milk of a woman following oral administration of 20 mg.
- Ask your doctor before taking Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) if you are breast feeding the safety and effectiveness of Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) have not been established for pediatric patients less than 2 years of age.
Possible Side Effects
Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) is well-tolerated PPIs. The most common side effects of Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) are diarrhea, headaches, rash and dizziness. Nervousness, abnormal heartbeat, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, weakness, leg cramps and water retention occur infrequently.

- If you experience an allergic reaction wth Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) stop taking Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) and seek emergency medical attention.
- Do not crush, chew and spit the capsule swallow the whole capsule.Instruct patient to take each dose on an empty stomach, at least 1 h before eating.
- If patient having difficulty swallowing the Generic Prilosec (Omeprazole) capsule open it and gently mix the pellets with 1 Tbsp of cool or cold applesauce or any juice and then immediately swallow the mixture without chewing. Remind patient not to crush or chew the pellets and not to prepare the pellet/applesauce mixture ahead of time or store for future use.
