Drug Uses
Generic Prevacid (Lansoprazole) is used to treat heartburn and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers like Duodenal ulcer, erosive esophagitis (damage and inflammation of the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) is also used in combination with antibiotics for H. pylori infection of the stomach.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor. Lansoprazole is a prodrug. After administration Lansoprazole diffuses in to the parietal cell of the stomach and accumulates in the secretory canaliculi. In the acidic medium Lansoprazole is converted to sulfenamide. This sulfenamide covalently interacts with sulfhydryl (SH) group in the proton pump (H+ K+ATPase) and inhibits the exchange of extracellular K+ for intracellular H+ ion. Lansoprazole irreversibly inhibits proton pumps activity and decreases gastric acid secretion.
Absorption: Lansoprazole is well absorbed after oral administration. Distribution: Lansoprazole is widely distributed in the body in protein bound form. Metabolism: Lansoprazole is extensively metabolised in the liver. Excretion: Lansoprazole is excreted mainly in the faeces and small amount in urine.
How Taken
- Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) is to be taken orally. Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) capsules should be taken1 hour before meals.
- Do not be crushed, chewed or opened Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) capsules swallow the whole.
- In adult the dose is: 15 - 30 mg / day to be taken before meals.
- Duodenal ulcer: 30 mg / day to be taken 30 minutes before meals for 1-2 months.
- Gastric ulcer: 30 mg / day for 1-2 months.
- Zollinger- Ellison syndrome: 60 mg / day increase the dose maximum up to 180 mg/ day in 2 divided doses if needed.
- Gastro esophageal reflux disease(GERD):15 mg / day for 2 months. Oesophagitis: 30 mg / day for 1-2 months.
- Acid related dyspepsia (indigestion or stomach upset): 15 - 30 mg / day for 1 month.
- NSAID associated ulceration: 15mg - 30 mg / day before breakfast for 1 month.
- Children: not recommended.
Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless your doctor directs otherwise. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.
Storage
Store at room temperature, 15-30 degrees C (59-86 degrees F). Keep away from moisture and Protect from light.
Warnings/Precautions
Consult with your doctor if you are pregnant since there are no adequate studies on the use of Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) in pregnant women. If you experience an allergic reaction with Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) stop taking Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) and seek emergency medical attention. Do not crush, chew and spit the capsule swallow the whole capsule.Instruct patient to take each dose on an empty stomach, at least 1 h before eating. If patient having difficulty swallowing the Generic Preavcid (Lansoprazole) capsule open it and gently mix the pellets with 1 Tbsp of cool or cold applesauce or any juice and then immediately swallow the mixture without chewing. Remind patient not to crush or chew the pellets and not to prepare the pellet/applesauce mixture ahead of time or store for future use.
