Drug Class and Mechanism
Amlodipine belongs to second generation dihydropyridine calcium (Ca) channel blocker. Amlodipine blocks the inflow of Ca ions into the peripheral vascular smooth muscle cells, the Coronary smooth muscle cells and to the myocardial cells and other arteries in the body, thus causes dilatation of vascular endothelium, decrease peripheral resistance, & reduce myocardial oxygen demand. By relaxing coronary arteries, Amlodipine is prevents chest pain (angina) and by relaxing the arteries muscles lining in the rest of the body lowers the blood pressure, which reduces the load on the heart as it pumps blood to the body.Absorption: Amlodipine is well absorbed orally and widely distributed in a protein bound form.
Amlodipine gets metabolized in liver.
How Taken
Take Generic Norvasc (Amlodipine) with a full glass of water.
Generic Norvasc (Amlodipine) is taken 5mg once a day. In Stable angina the dose is 5 to 10mg once daily in Hypertension the dose is 2.5 to 5 mg once daily Maximum recommended dose is 10mg/day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Generic Norvasc and gradually increase your dose. Do not stop taking Generic Norvasc without talking to your doctor. Eat a low-sodium (salt) diet.
Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose of this medication. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take only the next regularly scheduled dose.
Over Dose
Measure the BP, Monitor & support cardiac and respiratory functions. Give cardiovascular support by elevating the limbs and maintaining fluid balance. Administer vasopressers like norepinephrine and Calcium gluconate if required.
Storage
Store at room temperature at a range of 15 to 25 degree C. Tablets should be stored in a tightly closed container. Keep out of reach of children, Protect from light and excessive heat.
Warnings/Precautions
Before taking Norvasc, tell your doctor if you have liver disease; or another disease of the heart or blood vessels such as sick sinus syndrome, aortic stenosis, heart failure, low blood pressure, or coronary artery disease. You may not be able to take Norvasc, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Norvasc is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether Norvasc will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. It is not known whether Norvasc passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Cardiovascular disorders: Use cautiously in cardiovascular disorders because it aggravates myocardial ischaemia. Sick sinus syndrome. Renal impairment. Use cautiously along with other antihypertensive drugs.
Possible Side Effects
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Norvasc and contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment: Palpitation, Flushing, Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal pain, Edema , Headache, Dizziness, Paresthesia, Light headedness, Fatigue, Aggravates myocardial ischaemia , Rashes.
Continue to take Norvasc and talk to your doctor if you experience any of the side effects:
· fatigue or tiredness;
· headache;
· insomnia;
· vivid or abnormal dreams;
· flushing;
· abdominal pain;
· nausea, diarrhea or
· Increased or difficulty in urination.
