Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPIs). Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach. Generic Nexium is used to treat the symptoms of GERD, allow the esophagus to heal, and prevent further damage to the esophagus. Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) is also used with other medications to prevent stomach ulcers. Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) also reduces the chance of gastric ulcers in patients who use a group of medicines called NSAIDs and who may be at greater risk (i.e., patients 60 years of age or older or patients who have a history of gastric ulcers). Drug Class and Mechanism
Esomeprazole is the S enantiomer of Omeprazole (Prilosec) and is a proton pump inhibitor. It is a prodrug. After administration it diffuses in to the parietal cell of the stomach and accumulates in the secretory canaliculi. In the acidic medium Esomeprazole is converted to sulfenamide. This sulfenamide covalently interacts with sulfhydryl (SH) group in the proton pump (H+ K+ATPase) and inhibits the exchange of extracellular K+ for intracellular H+ ion. Esomeprazole irreversibly inhibits proton pumps activity and decreases gastric acid secretion. As compared to Omeprazole, Esomeprazole produces better control of intragastric acidity in Gastroesophageal reflux diseases. It is as effective as Omeprazole in other disease condition. Chemically, esomeprazole is very similar to omeprazole. Proton pump inhibitors are used for the treatment of conditions such as stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the Zollinger-Ellison (also termed as Acid-Rain) syndrome which all are caused by stomach acid. Esomeprazole, like other proton-pump inhibitors, blocks the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. How Taken

- Gastro-esophageal Reflux Disease (GORD): Healing of erosive oesophagitis: 20mg or 40mg once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. Maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis: 20mg once daily.
- Symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease: 20mg once daily for 4 weeks.
- H. pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence Esomeprazole: 40mg, once daily for 10 days along with Amoxycillin and Clarithromycin.
Missed Dose
Do not take a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose.
Storage
Store Generic Nexium (Esomeprazole) at 15 - 30 degree C in a tightly closed container away from moisture and heat. Protect from light.
